Sebastian try out alkujaan kreikkalais-latinalainen miehen etunimi. Nimi merkitsee Sebasten asukasta. Vanhalla ajalla Sebaste oli Vähässä-Aasiassa sijainnut kaupunki, jonka nimi tuli ’kunnioitettavaa’ tarkoittavasta kreikan kielen sanasta sebastos (σεβαστος) ja oli samalla käännös keisari Augustuksen nimestä.[1] Nimen on tehnyt laajalti suosituksi varsinkin Pyhä Sebastianus, kristillinen marttyyri, jonka muistopäivä 20. tammikuuta on Suomessakin nykyään (vuodesta 2010 lähtien) Sebastianin nimipäivä.

Suomessa nimi Sebastian oli 1900-luvun alkupuolella varsin harvinainen, mutta on 1960-luvulta lähtien yleistynyt. Vuoden 2019 loppuun mennessä nimi oli annettu 15 949 miehelle ja ainakin 13 naiselle.[2]
